1988 Pathfinder. I used to own one just like this. It was great. Looked just like this.

The camshaft key broke at 85mph. Game over for the engine. Couldn't afford a new engine. This was 18 years ago. I miss that truck.

Had to think hard to remember exactly what happened as it was soooooo long ago... The key, a $5 part, a tiny piece of metal, broke and the pieces then tore a chunk of camshaft off from the edge of the notch where it sits. You can just JB Weld that. Needed a new camshaft and a few other minor bits. Sadly, to replace that, the engine had to be pulled and the bottom half rebuilt. The cost of a new engine was less than the cost of the repair. Game over.

I had the absolute best mechanic at that time. He was a god with cars. He said he had only seen this happen once before, working on a Bug in Hawaii back in 1967. He then showed me a nasty scar on his knuckles that he said came from that repair.
